How To Apply Everyday Makeup: Step-By-Step Guide

Makeup is arguably one of man’s greatest innovations, and is used by millions of women regularly around the world. It can help hide those stubborn dark circles, spots or blemishes. For a beginner, makeup seems like a huge task. It should be applied enough so as to be effective, but not so much that it too extra for day-to-day use. This is a delicate balance, which requires practice and time. Easy everyday makeup steps are hard to find. If you are tired of complicated beauty videos, here are some everyday makeup steps to guide you:

Everyday Makeup Steps

Step 1: Clean your face

Start with cleansing your face with a face wash. Use a face wash suitable for your skin type. There are washes suited for dry skin, oily skin, normal skin and more. Make sure to clean your pores for applying makeup over clogged pores leads to skin inflammation and acne. Wash your face for at least five minutes and then pat it dry with a clean washcloth or towel.

Step 2: Moisturize

Apply some sunscreen if you plan to spend the day in the sun. Use a sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30. There are many popular, skin-friendly brands you can go for like St. Botanica, Globus etc. Use some moisture as well to prep your makeup base, especially if you have dry skin.

Step 3: Primer

With clean hands, apply primer to your face. This helps to smoothen out the skin, and makes it an even base for the application of makeup. It also makes the makeup last for a longer period of time. Dab it on your cheeks, forehead and chin and gently rub it in.

Step 4: Foundation

Now its time to hide your blemishes and spots. Use a foundation to achieve one-toned skin. Ensure that the foundation matches your skin tone. Take the help of a professional at the store if required. Pump some product out on different areas of your face. You can apply the foundation in various ways like makeup brushes, beauty blenders and even your fingers. For beginners I highly recommend you to use your fingers for it gives you the greatest control during application. For an everyday makeup look, apply a thin layer of foundation. Some excellent foundations (tried and tested by me) which you should add to your makeup routine include the Maybelline New York Fit Me Foundation and the Lancome Teint Idole Ultra Wear.

Step 5: Concealer

You can now proceed to concealer. Concealer helps you specifically cover your dark circles and pimples. Use the wand and apply a generous amount under your eyes. Use a makeup sponge to blend it in. The most important rule of makeup is to blend, blend, blend. As James Charles, the Celebrity Makeup Artist famously said, “Blend, but don’t blend in.” My favorite concealers are from Mac and Smashbox.

Step 6: Powder

Brush on some translucent powder to set the makeup in place. This is an essential part of your makeup routine. This helps your makeup to stay vibrant throughout the day.

Step 7: Bronzer/ Blush

If you want to change the structure and make your cheeks look leaner, you can use some bronzer. This should be applied from the high point of your cheekbones, down the natural slope of your face. However, bronzer changes the look of your features, so it shouldn’t be a part of your everyday makeup look. Instead go for a lovely red blush in the apples of your cheeks. It adds color to your face, and gives you a younger, fresher appearance. You can apply powder blush with the help of a makeup brush. A cream blush is more in style nowadays, for the extra pop of color it adds. Just use your finger to dab some spots on your cheeks and rub it in. Some must adds to your makeup steps include Sugar and Benefits Cosmetics.

Step 8: Highlighter

Now its time to make your face shine and glow with my personal favorite makeup product: highlighter. It adds sparkle to your face and makes you look alive and beautiful. Highlighters come in many forms like powder and cream sticks. I recommend powder highlighters for they are very eye catching. Remember to not overdo it on the highlighter for these are everyday makeup steps. Some suitable areas to apply highlighter to include your cheekbones, the inner corners of your eyes, your chin, the sides of your forehead and your cupid’s bow. You should experiment and see how it suits you and your look! I recommend the Fenty Beauty Highlighter by Rihanna.

Step 9: Eye Shadow

Next it is time to do your eyes. For a natural look pick a light neutral eye shadow tone which matches your outfit that day. For an everyday makeup look, avoid bright blues, dark greens and blacks. Instead choose white, beige, silver, light pink etc. Apply this over your eyelid by using an eye shadow applicator or a thin makeup brush. Blend this towards the edges and ensure that it isn’t a straight line. You can buy different types of eye shadow palettes ranging from bright colors to nudes to glitters.

Step 10: Fill in Eyebrows

If you feel like your eyebrows aren’t thick enough, you can fill them in by using an eyebrow pencil. This pencil is essentially just like a regular person and rather easy to use. Outline your eyebrow and fill the color in using the black eyebrow pencil. Most people choose to skip this step in their hurried morning makeup routine!

Step 11: Eyeliner

Use an eyeliner to outline the edge of your eyelid. This will make your eyes pop and draw attention to them. You can use a pencil or a liquid liner depending on your level of experience. You can use black or brown eyeliner or go for a specific color that compliments your eye shadow. After you apply it along the length of your lid, make a wing to end the line. This is a big trend right now, although it will take a beginner some practice to get it right. You can also use kajal if you desire for your lower lash line.

Step 12: Eyelashes

Photo by Engin Akyurt from Pexels

While doing your makeup, try to do your eyelashes last. There are many things you can do to accentuate your eyelashes. Use an eyelash curler to add a natural curl to your lashes. This makes them look longer and maintained. You can purchase a cheap one from any drugstore or Amazon. If you want to spend money judiciously, always spend lavishly on the makeup products and save on the appliances and devices. For an everyday makeup look a tube of mascara from Nykaa should be sufficient. Always apply thin coats of mascara on your lashes and try to avoid the product from gathering on a single lash. Spread it evenly using the mascara applicator or a small eyelash brush. You can also now purchase transparent gel-like mascara, which gives the effect of long lashes. Some people wear false lashes but it seems impractical for day-to-day wear.

Step 13: Lipstick

The last step is lipstick! Finish this process by applying a cute pink or red shade on your lips. There are a variety of options available in the market but these two are the most commonly used. Complete this with a sparkly layer of lip gloss to take your lip game to a whole new level.

If you follow these steps, you will surely be the center of attention wherever you go. However these everyday makeup steps take time to develop, so don’t be too harsh on yourself. Practice as much as you can, experiment with new types of makeup, but remember to have fun!
