Apple’s iOS 15 Drivers License Feature which would allow users to add their driving license and IDs to the wallet app on iPhones has been delayed till 2022.
As of last month, Apple disclosed this feature at WWDC ’21 and added that it would be released before the fall of 2021. Arizona, Georgia, and a few other states like Connecticut, Iowa, Kentucky, Maryland, Oklahoma, and Utah were announced to be among the first states to use this feature before the end of the year. Apple also added that many other U.S states would be added subsequently as it makes plans to make the feature worldwide.
Apple had earlier stated that the feature was created with the vision to replace physical cards with a secured and feasible mobile wallet. And would first be available at selected airport security checkpoints and lanes administered by The Transportation Security Administration (TSA).
“Travelers will benefit from a more smooth airport security screening experience thanks to this new and innovative mobile driver’s license and state ID project with Apple and states around the country”, TSA Administrator said in agreement.
According to Apple, users would easily be able to add a driver’s license by tapping on the + button in the wallet app on their iPhone. And by tapping on the identity reader on either the iPhone or Apple watch, users would receive a popup on their device, displaying the particular information sought by TSA.
Apple has foregrounded the privacy and security of this feature. It stated that all Customers’ personal information is encrypted and safeguarded against theft and tampering. Only the individual who added the ID to the device can view or show their ID or license in Wallet using biometric authentication which utilizes Face ID and Touch ID. So, Users will not need to unlock, show, or hand up their device since driver’s licenses and state IDs in Wallet would only be presented digitally through encrypted communication directly between the device and the identification reader.
Earlier today, it was discovered that the iOS 15 driver’s license feature which was detailed on the webpage had been removed. However, the company has notified its customers of the delay of the feature via the iOS 15 web page.
Apple, however, has not given any feedback on when the feature would be arriving in 2022 since it’s not enabled in iOS 15.2 beta.
